Why Even the Camera-Shy Dads End Up Loving Their Family Photo Sessions
If I'm honest, one of my absolute favourite things to hear at the end of a family session is this:
"That actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be!"
And more often than not… It's Dad saying it.
Now, I get it. When someone says "family photos," it's easy to imagine a heap of awkward poses, forced smiles, and standing still while hoping someone tells you where you should put your hands.
But that's never how my sessions work.
Whether we're wandering along a Perth beach at sunset or exploring one of my favourite local parks, my goal is simple: to help your family relax, have fun, and enjoy spending time together.
Because the best family photos aren't created by posing perfectly, but by capturing your genuine connection.
A Family Photoshoot Should Feel Like Spending Real, Quality Time Together
One of the biggest compliments I receive is when families tell me the session felt more like a fun afternoon together than a photoshoot.
That's exactly how I want it to feel!
My sessions are intentionally relaxed, fun, and full of movement.
Instead of having you stand in stiff poses and telling you exactly where to stand perfectly still for an hour… I’ll give you plenty of ideas and gentle direction.
You’ll never feel like you’re performing for the camera as I encourage you to interact and – most importantly – simply enjoy being together.
Your kids might run around, climb onto your shoulders, or hold your hand while we wander. You might share some laughs, or some cuddles.
It’s my job to create space for those real moments to unfold naturally.
Those are the moments worth capturing, after all.
Why Dads Usually Relax So Quickly
I've photographed enough families over the years to know that dads often arrive at a session feeling a little (or, sometimes, a lot!) unsure.
Some openly admit they're only there because their partner booked the session. Others promise they'll smile for "just a few photos."
By the end, though?
They're usually the ones most enthusiastically chasing the kids, throwing them into the air, sharing jokes – and completely forgetting that the camera is even there.
Why?
Because they realise they don't have to be anything other than themselves.
There's no pressure to pose perfectly, no expectation to perform. Just time with the people they love most.
And that's where the magic happens.
My Family Photo Sessions Are Designed to Feel Comfortable and Easy – For Everyone
Whether you've got energetic toddlers, teenagers who'd rather be literally anywhere else, or a partner who's convinced they aren't photogenic… I've got you!
I consider myself to be a pretty down-to-earth person. There's no pretending to be someone I'm not, and no big performance.
My job is to help everyone feel comfortable enough to forget the camera is even there.
I have a way of putting nervous people at ease, and I consider watching someone's confidence grow during a session to be one of the best parts of what I do.
So it’s no surprise that my photography sessions move naturally in a way that makes everyone feel comfortable enough to be fully present and engaged – without feeling any rush or pressure.
Before you know it, everyone has relaxed enough to have a tonne of fun, and we've created a gallery filled with genuine moments that tell your family's story.
Plus, by the time we're finished, people aren't just walking away with beautiful photographs – they're walking away feeling genuinely good about themselves.
Why These Family Photos Become More Valuable Every Year
Right now, your kids probably think Dad is the strongest person in the world.
They want all the shoulder rides, big bear hugs, and piggyback races. The “one more game” before dinner, and the “one more cuddle” before bed.
But, just like your children, all of those lovely little rituals won’t stay little forever.
One day, these photographs won't just remind you what everyone looked like – they'll remind you what life felt like.
The laughter, the chaos. The way your child wrapped their tiny hand around Dad's finger. The way everyone fit together in that season of life.
And those memories become more precious with every passing year.
A Father's Day Gift That Lasts
With Father's Day just around the corner, it's easy to fall back on the usual gifts.
You know the ones I mean…
The socks. Another coffee mug. Maybe a new gadget.
But if you're looking for something a little more meaningful… a family photography session is truly a gift that keeps giving.
Not because Dad wants more photos of himself – but because your family deserves photographs that include him.
Photographs your children will treasure one day.
Photographs that capture the love, laughter, and connection that already exist every single day in your family life.
Let's Capture Your Family, Just As You Are
If you've been waiting for the "right time" to organise family photos, consider this your sign.
You don't need perfect outfits, or the perfect weather, or for your kids to behave perfectly.
You just need to show up together.
I'll take care of the rest.
Get in touch with me. Together, we'll create a relaxed, fun experience – and a gallery full of honest photographs that your family will treasure for years to come.
If you'd rather let Dad choose a date that suits your family, my photography gift vouchers are also available and make a thoughtful Father's Day surprise (or “just because” or birthday gift too).
