What to Expect from An In-Home Newborn Photography Session

Bringing home a new baby is equal parts beautiful, emotional, exhausting, and completely life-changing.

Your days suddenly revolve around feeds, naps, nappy changes, and sleepless nights spent soaking up every tiny little detail of this brand-new human you've fallen head over heels for.

So when someone suggests newborn photos, your first thought might be:

"How on earth am I supposed to get everyone ready, presentable and out the door right now?"

The good news?

You don't have to.

One of the reasons I love offering in-home newborn photography sessions right here in Perth is because they allow you to stay exactly where you're most comfortable – at home, snuggled up with your baby, in the very spaces where your family's newest chapter is just starting to unfold.

Why Choose an In-Home Newborn Photography Session?

There is something so special about documenting your baby’s first days or weeks in the place where their story begins.

Oh, and there’s no packing the nappy bag, loading up the car, or stressing because your baby suddenly needs another feed just as you’re rushing out the door.

I come to you so you can all stay relaxed in the comfort of your own home, settling your baby as and when you need to – no pressure, just pure presence.

Because, let’s be honest – life with a newborn isn’t exactly predictable… and your photoshoot shouldn’t expect it to be.

Don’t Worry – Your Home Doesn’t Need to Look Perfect

One of the first things parents often say to me is:

"But my house isn't photo-ready!"

I’m going to let you in on a secret…

As a family and newborn photographer, it’s not my job to capture a display home – I don’t need a perfect house. It’s my job to capture connection.

Some of my favourite places to photograph newborn babies and families include:

  • Your master bedroom

  • The nursery you so lovingly prepared

  • The living room, where everyone gathers together

  • The kitchen, where everyday life happens

It’s these areas, where your family naturally spends time together, that provide the most perfect backdrop for your photos.

Years from now, when you’re looking back and remembering what life looked and felt like during those precious newborn days, those spaces will have become part of your family’s story, too.

All that I’ll ask for before your session is that you have a few areas – ideally with good natural light for extra beautiful photos (usually spaces near larger windows) – free of clutter.

Oh, and a nice warm space will help keep your little one comfortable, settled, sleepy, and happy throughout the session. Babies hate feeling cold, so during the winter months, you might want to pop the heater on before I arrive.

What Should We Wear?

The short answer? Whatever makes you feel most comfortable!

I always bring with me a selection of wraps and simple newborn outfits for your baby, as well as a collection of dresses available for mums who might like to borrow one.

The most important thing is that you feel like yourself.

Again, my goal isn’t to capture perfection in these photos, but to capture your family’s real connection in the way that feels most authentic to you.

The most beautiful photos come from the natural moments in which you’re all feeling most relaxed, comfortable, and focused on one another – not on the overly-styled outfits you’ve forced yourselves into!

My Approach is Relaxed, Natural, and Totally Baby-Led

If you’ve spent any time looking through my work, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of capturing authentic moments.

I’m not a heavily posed newborn photographer – that’s just not me.

I want your photos to feel like your family.

So I love the real moments…

The way your baby curls into your chest.

The sleepy cuddles on the bed.

The older sibling proudly showing off their new baby brother or sister.

The way your partner looks at you and your baby when they think no one’s watching.

The way your pet loyally follows everyone around the house.

Those are the moments that matter – that tell your family’s story.

Rather than forcing you and your family into awkward poses, I’ll gently prompt and guide you through simple, natural interactions that allow your genuine connection to shine through.

We might:

  • Sit on the floor

  • Cuddle on the bed

  • Read some stories

  • Play with your baby’s big siblings

  • Laugh together

We’ll simply spend some quality time together, while I quietly document it all.

Why My Neonatal Nursing Experience Makes a Difference

Something that you might not yet know is that photography isn’t my only background…

Before becoming a photographer, I spent more than two decades working as a neonatal nurse.

Those years taught me so much about caring for newborn babies, supporting families, and the importance of creating calm during what can feel like an incredibly overwhelming season of life.

I understand newborn behaviour. I know how to safely handle and settle babies, and when they might need a break.

And, perhaps most importantly, I know that babies work entirely on their own timeline.

It’s why I allow up to two hours for every newborn session.

That way, if your baby needs feeding, or settling, or a nappy change, or a cuddle… we stop.

Every baby is different, and there’s never any rush.

My newborn photo sessions flow around your baby – not the other way around.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is about the best time to book newborn photos.

If you’re dreaming of some gorgeous, sleepy, scrunchy, curled-up newborn photos, the first two weeks – when babies are typically sleepier and more settled – are the most ideal.

That said, there is no wrong time.

Some families book within days of bringing their baby home, while others wait weeks for them to grow – and become more alert, curious, and awake in the process.

Every stage is beautiful, and each offers an opportunity to capture some beautiful memories of your family’s story.

These Tiny Days Don’t Last Forever

Right now, it probably feels like you’ll always be living between feeds, washing, cuddles, and very little sleep.

But one day you’ll realise just how quickly it all changed…

How fast those tiny fingers grew, the newborn scrunch disappeared, and those sleepy stretches turned into first steps and toddler adventures.

And suddenly those early days feel like a blur – and you find yourself wishing you could revisit those coffee- and cuddle-fuelled moments just one more time.

That’s why newborn photography matters.

Not because they’re perfect, but because they remind you of how it all felt – how tiny they once were, how deeply you loved them in those moments, and how your family looked at the very beginning of that beautiful new chapter of life.

Let’s Capture the Newborn Chapter Together

If you're expecting a little one or have recently welcomed your baby into the world, I'd love to help you preserve these memories with a relaxed, natural in-home newborn photography session in Perth.

You only get so many of those newborn days, and you deserve to remember them – and all of the tiny details, overwhelming levels of love, sleepy cuddles, and beautiful chaos that come with them.

While you focus on soaking up each precious moment with your baby, I’ll take care of capturing each one, offering gentle guidance, and providing beautiful memories you and your family will treasure for years to come.

Get in touch with me – and let's tell your story together.
